It’s a slow beating, the drops echoing on the thin sheet of metal above. The gift from the heavens finding their way down the makeshift roof to a bolt hole and falling down the side of Hall’s throat. The rasp as blood clear out of his windpipe reminds him of what came to past. It couldn’t have been more than a couple of minutes, but the haze in his head made it seem like an age past. His legs gain balance quickly, he could go after them, but there is no point. There was no point in playing hero. She seemed to neither need nor want it. And going after them for the sake of healing a bruised ego in this state was a fools’ errand. The fall had already gone, and pride was in a diluted crimson pile on the sidewalk.
The walk home was uneasy. Doubt gnawed inside. She left him for them. THEM! A slew of terms came to mind, things that at this time of night would have served to drive her to ecstasy, but tonight are filled with a fouler passion. The rage that filled his soul was burning away the remnants of alcohol, allowing the spirit to ease out of his steps, the unease of the events replaced with the urgency to get back home. The soft gurgling sound in former black void of pain proving not only was there a bottom to that gap, but the bile ready to spew forth at the world was not merely metaphoric.
